Product Introduction
Henan GO Biotech Co., Ltd. explains how to compare pure TOTM and TOTM/DOTP blends by cost per tonne of qualified PVC cable compound at the same hardness and 105°C heat-resistance rating.

Neither pure TOTM nor a TOTM/DOTP blend is necessarily the lower-cost choice for a PVC cable compound. A meaningful comparison starts with formulations that achieve the same finished hardness and meet the same specified 105°C heat-resistance test criteria. The relevant figure is the cost per tonne of qualified compound, not the purchase price of plasticizer alone.

Why formulation costs can differ

TOTM, or trioctyl trimellitate, is a heat-resistant plasticizer used in durable flexible PVC applications. Its low volatility and resistance to migration make it relevant to cable compounds intended for elevated-temperature service. DOTP can be considered as a blending component when processing and formulation cost are also important.

A blend may change the amount of plasticizer required, processing behaviour and heat-ageing performance. Its suitability therefore has to be verified in the complete formulation; replacing TOTM with DOTP does not by itself establish compliance with a 105°C cable specification.

Compare formulations on the same basis

  1. Set common acceptance criteria. Define the target finished hardness, the applicable 105°C heat-resistance test method and pass criteria, and any other cable-compound requirements relevant to the application.
  2. Prepare comparable formulations. Record the actual quantities of TOTM, DOTP and all other ingredients in each formulation. Adjustments needed to reach the same hardness should be included rather than assumed equal.
  3. Test the finished compounds. Check both candidates against the agreed criteria, including heat ageing and any required electrical or other finished-product properties. Only qualifying formulations should proceed to the cost comparison.
  4. Use actual production costs. Include delivered ingredient prices, processing costs, yield and losses for each candidate under comparable production conditions.
  5. Compare cost per tonne of qualified output. Recalculate when prices, formulation, operating conditions or acceptance requirements change.

A practical cost calculation

For each candidate, use the same production and accounting boundary:

Cost per tonne of qualified compound = total included ingredient and processing costs ÷ tonnes of qualified compound produced

Calculate ingredient costs from actual quantities and delivered prices. Include the cost impact of production losses and rejected material within the same accounting boundary, without counting them twice. A lower ingredient bill may not produce the lower qualified-compound cost if processing costs or yield differ.

What to check before making a choice

  • Heat resistance: A 105°C requirement must be tied to the specified test and acceptance criteria; temperature alone does not define the test.
  • Hardness and plasticizer loading: Compare compounds at the same finished hardness and use measured formulation quantities.
  • Processing: TOTM can require longer PVC plasticization time and may have poorer initial flow than DOTP. Measure the effect on the actual production process rather than assuming a fixed cost difference.
  • Long-term performance: Assess volatility, migration and electrical properties where required by the cable specification. A formulation that fails an essential requirement is not a qualified lower-cost alternative.

Product and supply considerations

TOTM is supplied as a transparent, pale-yellow oily liquid. Its molecular formula is C₃₃H₅₄O₆ and its CAS number is 25103-12-2. Common packaging options include 200 kg iron drums, 1,000 kg IBCs and flexitanks.

Store sealed in a cool, ventilated warehouse at 5–35°C, away from heat, open flames, oxidizing substances, strong acids and strong alkalis. The stated shelf life under normal storage conditions is 12 months.

Information to prepare for a comparison

For a discussion with Henan GO Biotech Co., Ltd., prepare the target hardness, applicable cable standard and test criteria, candidate formulations, delivered material prices, processing records and qualified yield. These inputs provide a practical basis for evaluating pure TOTM against a TOTM/DOTP blend without relying on plasticizer price alone.
